You Are The Wave & The Ocean
Most of us can agree that a large part of the self is our mind. I was listening to a podcast that spoke about different religions' views on the self. When it comes to the example of the mind, many religions see the self as the person (soul) observing the workings of the mind. The person listening to the inner monologue we have every day. A standout was Buddhism, which did not view that observer of progress as an unchanging self or soul but instead teaches that even that "self" is impermanent and will change. What that self sees as progress today may wake up and say it is not progress tomorrow (a changed mind/self).
The "self" is looked at as a process that has interconnecting parts (including the mind), all of which go through transformation. Even the deepest core of the "self" you experience, transforms and is a reflection of a working system (a wave in an ocean, a star in the sky...impactful but having a life cycle/process of change).
So, if we view our minds as a part of an everchanging process that makes us who we are moment by moment, instead of this thing that determines our future, worth, stability, and capacity for all time...it will allow more room for you to change it. Your mind rehearses you on "you" daily. When refusing to accept the fluidity of who you are or the life you live, the mind will attach to the present or past version of who you are, who you are not, who you could "never" be (even after change has occurred). And no matter how great this image the mind has attached itself to is, if there is attachment, suffering will soon follow.
In reality, you are consciousness trapped in a hall of mirrors (*enter(s) the dragon* 😆🐉). But you are not trapped. Every reflection of the mind is the mind at work. You created the mirrors and the hall. You also created the process that would experience a reality of being trapped. If you detach your mind from that reality and allow that process we call "you" to change, you will then create a new reality of being free.
But just remember, you are already free. When's the last time you saw someone successfully capture and imprison a wave or a star? 🙂
